"It took me a bit to get into this book. I was expecting the quick dive in I am used to with Rick Riordan's books, since this is part of his imprint. The main character (or heroine, as she would prefer) is deeply flawed. Which, in the end makes for some really interesting character growth opportunities.
She is almost a pathological liar at the beginning of the book. She has good reasons for it, which a lot of kids her age can probably relate to. I never lied on that scale, but I can really sympathize with her. She has an almost resentful relationship with her mother, who is always away on business trips and always forgetting things that are important to Aru. Aru also has a difficult time connecting with the kids in her school--the lies are her shield from what she thinks is inevitable mockery. Ultimately, Aru really wants to fit in, but because she doesn't think she will she choose to lie about why she doesn't fit in.
This leads to her making a very poor choice and awakening a demon who is bent on destroying the world. She's thrown on a quest (While in her Spiderman pjs) to save the world and her only help is another girl her age, Mini, who is afraid that everything is going to kill her in some way and a talking pigeon.
Its a fun story and pulls in the colorful world of Indian mythology really well. I also REALLY loved having girl characters driving the narrative.
I will be looking forward to checking out the next book."

• Since I'm rather passionate about books and reading, I often purchase books for my grandchildren for special occasions. This was for my granddaughter's birthday and it was an excellent choice.  I'll admit that my initial choice was based on the stunning cover art, pre-teen female heroines, and the recommendation from Rick Riordan. 
  
  A wonderful fantasy based on Indian mythology and Hindu culture, with a flavor of some of the Disney stories including animals who can talk, this is a fun adventure story about a 12-year-old girl who messed up by telling a lie to her school friends.  To try to wiggle her way out of being caught in the lie, she lit a 'cursed' lamp at the museum where her archeologist mother worked and released a demon known as "the Sleeper" causing time to STOP! 
  
  The story is exciting and fast-paced with complete descriptions to immerse the reader in the story providing a feeling that you can see and hear the diverse and interesting characters. Intense yet funny with strong young female characters.  
  
  A birthday gift to be proud of -this was a hit!
• My 11 year old son loves for me to read to him each night. I bought this book on the recommendation of a young girl who attends the same music school as him.
  
  I've been reading one chapter each night and each chapter is fantastic. It is a delight for me to read and a real struggle to not finish reading the entire book by myself (that's against our rules). Listening to him laugh in response to Aru's dry wit or Mini's concerns is great.
  
  If your kid/s enjoys Harry Potter or Rick Riodan novels, they will LOVE this book. It's funny and delightful. The descriptions of the world are amazing and vivid. Kids around age 11 will love Aru's voice. Mini will be someone they instantly sympathize with because she is adorable. Also because the characters they encounter and places they go are often based on Hindu mythology (rather than Greek/Roman/Norse mythology that proliferate most western children's literature) everything feels fresh and new! Especially to the adult reading the book aloud to their child!
  
  We can't wait for a sequel!
• Only a little ways into this and am blown away so far. I've never read a book with Hindu mythology before, so this is new and unique to me. It has all the things I love about a Rick Riordan book while teaching me about a culture I know very little about. Cannot wait to see where this series goes!!

• “Aru Shah and the End of Time” is one of the first novels published by Rick Riordan’s new imprint Rick Riordan Presents. Following the same style of Mr. Riordan’s Percy Jackson novels, Aru Shah is about a young girl who finds out she is the reincarnation of one of the Pandava brothers after a series of unfortunate events (she tried to impress some popular kids and then well…the end of time began). Roshani Chokshi introduces the reader a rich world of Indian mythology, which turns out is much more wild and colorful than Greek/Roman mythology. In this middle-grade novel, Ms. Chokshi takes us in an unforgettable adventure that will make you wish you had your own glowing ball of crazy magic.
  
  Aru Shah is the first story I have read by Ms. Chokshi, and I'm impressed. Ms. Chokshi is a flowery writer. And I don’t mean that in the way that she writes nonsense, but that her prose is like a garden of flowers — beautiful, delicate, fierce, colorful and wonderful to all the senses. She blends modernity and mythology so effortlessly I would sometimes forget that we do not live in Aru’s world.
  
  Speaking of Aru, the main protagonist of this little adventure, she is amazing. Aru reminded me of me, a young girl with a wild imagination and no real friends to share it with. Unlike me, Aru had spark and strength to go do what is right even when it is wrong, but most importantly she would stand up for herself with no fear (even though there is much to fear).
  
  Aru’s character grows throughout the novel is something I wish upon everyone that age, finding their inner strength to acknowledge your fault/weaknesses and use them to your advantage to save the world from ending. Even though she is only 12 years old, Aru is a character that any person of any age can appreciate, love and see themselves in.
  
  Aru’s world is filled with interesting and fleshed out characters who will win your heart. Like Boo, Mini, the palace, and Chitrigupta (just to name a few). Each one of the characters felt independent with their own little quirks. You’ll cheer for them and wish to protect them. Yes, even the palace.
  
  This story is about adventure, friendship, family, sisterhood, trying not to die, but most importantly it is about self-acceptance.
  
  I look forward to Aru’s next adventure in Aru Shah and the Song of Death. WHICH BY THE WAY!!! There is a boy on the cover!!! *eyebrow wiggles*

• LOVE this book. It really helps me put things in perspective and I’ve already been able to speak my mind to people a lot easier without worrying about their feelings too much. This book made me feel normal.
• I think the word “amazing” gets over used. But this book is literally amazing. It was almost weird how much I related to the author. Almost like she was reading my mind. I read this book in 2 days during some major downtime at work. I didn’t buy this because I felt like I needed a “self help” book, but that’s exactly what this book was for me. I had no idea how much I actually needed this book until I read it. It’s nice to know that so many other people have had similar experiences in life as me. I actually think a wide range of people could benefit from this book. Even people who don’t identify with being an empath. I want to recommend this book to everyone I know.

• What a guide. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's questioned/questioning/curious about their relationship with alcohol, whether it be in a sober moment realizing you can feel utterly grateful to be alive without outside influence or in the throes of a 48-72 hour hangover full of tears and existential crises (I didn't recognize I suffered that second part consciously until Ruby spelled it out). I found myself reflected throughout this book, sometimes in shocking and hilarious parallel, and it helps in recognizing just how connected and relatable we are to every other human in both triumph & joy and in our darker emotions and experiences. Ruby writes from compassionate place of common experience and comes across as a friend.
  
  Ruby thoughtfully explores and shares data woven into a nakedly honest narrative with gentle humor and lack of judgment. She carefully examines every aspect of the human existence, especially in how we socialize, and the possible differences in how we might experience each without alcohol, acknowledging the moments where we might use alcohol to assist or protect ourselves, and where we might not be realizing how it can contribute to greater harm, adverse results, and dulled clarity, both in our lives and in our collective consciousness. This book is full of guidance without being dogmatic, and while some of the subject matter can weigh heavy on the mind in prompting stark reflection, I find it balanced with plenty of opportunities for smiles and giggles.
  
  As a fellow privileged white, cis-gendered, able-bodied female, I appreciate her consistent acknowledgement of how our daily existence differs from the systemically oppressed and marginalized in our society and lacking the daily prejudices and violence BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) face. This is awareness I've committed to growing in myself, and she discusses how becoming sober curious can enable those interested in the same to step outside of ourselves and have more energy to act and uplift those who don't benefit from the privileges I know I possess without earning. Comfort and safety look difference from each perspective, but through incorporating insight from thought leaders and healers from all communities, she seeks to illustrate the benefits and provide guidance to free resources so that any human might benefit from this exploration, through better sleep, more balanced emotional responses/management, more energy, and beyond. I personally am experiencing an awakening to my own power and the control I do possess, however more easily I might be able to wield it than others.
  
  In previous attempts to moderate or take extended breaks from drinking, I found I was full of disbelief and an aching to return to my previous consumption patterns at the end of each stint. This time feels different, not only because I spent December examining and questioning my behaviors in the face of being laid off due to company financial troubles, returning to college, and the amount of hustle and clarity my life will require for survival, but because Sober Curious helps me take a softer approach and focus on what's being added to my life--not the deprivation mindset I used so many times before. I hope those who pick this book up find comfort and shared humor in the journey, even if that journey is just absorbing this knowledge before/without practically applying it to life. I know it's helping me in several ways, and for Ruby and her work, I'm forever grateful.
• Thank you, Ruby Warrington, for writing what I was thinking in 2014/15 when I couldn't quite figure out what was "wrong" in my life - hello, it was booze. Although, I'm not curious about sobriety now at 936+ days (because for me, it's a better way to live), I am always curious about other people's paths and perspectives. Ruby's is relatable, relevant and a must read.

• I came to Ruby's work through Material Girl, Mystical World and the chapter in that book on being sober curious intrigued me. I was so excited to get this book in my hands and it did NOT disappoint! I finished it in 3 days-- I couldn't put it down. I especially loved the chapters on sobriety + spiritual practice, and sobriety + social justice. It was so refreshing to see some real honest discussion about privilege and to see Ruby quoting diverse folks and perspectives in the book. Would definitely recommend getting a copy!
• So much information, but not intimidating or lecturing. Choices abound here on how to handle your own alcohol profile. This seems to be a breakthrough concept. Don’t be afraid to be “curious.”
• Too political. I want to edit my drinking...not be lectured about white privilege or her guilt of her white privilege.
• I gravitated toward's Ruby's book in the midst of an experimental year-long break from alcohol, in an effort to better understand myself, and as a part of this journey to re-evaluate my relationship with alcohol for the betterment of my life. I was honestly surprised by the large amount of profound statements and aha's I took away from this book, as evidenced by the copious highlighted passages in my kindle version. It was challenging and encouraging in all the best ways, and I've been recommending it left and right to friends who are either on a similar journey or not, because I think it asks questions that many of us won't dare to ask ourselves, but that are so incredibly necessary and potentially life-saving. I couldn't recommend this book more if alcohol has impacted your life in any way. This book isn't about stripping away a delightful pleasure or ritual, it's about helping you question anything that is holding you back from living your most full, healthy, and present life possible. • This book was an impulse buy, and I can honestly say, it has changed my life! Ruby Warrington's writing is incredibly honest and she writes in a way that makes you feel as if you're a longtime friend. This book is not just about getting curious about living an alcohol-free life, it's about getting clarity on all the different parts of yourself that you may have ignored, backed away from, or shunned. Ruby displays incredible bravery by peeling back the layers of herself, while inviting readers to do the same.
